Platform

A computing platform, also called a virtual platform, is the environment within which a specific piece of software (code) is executed. It can be an operating system or the hardware, either a web browser using an interpreted language such as Java, Perl, PHP, etc., and related client-side coding, or other underlying technologies, such as XML, JavaFX, Flash, JavaScript, etc. Any computer that has a desktop PC, laptop, tablet PC or smartphone can have a computing platform. Modern laptops and their systems come with pre-installed operating systems and software that come pre-loaded. To use a particular platform, one simply needs to install the corresponding software and load it on to the PC.
