An edifice, or building, is any structure having a definite construction, either permanent or temporary, and usually stands independently. The structure may be made of earth or metals, wood, concrete, masonry, glass, stone, or other such material. A building must be built to a prescribed standard, either by the local authority or by an established building code. Thus, a building survey is a complete method for the study of buildings.
